MATH AND TECHNOLOGY
Smartboard Lesson
For my music class at St. Thomas University, my group gave a presentation on integrating music into math. Alisha McCorriston and I created our first Music and Math Smartboard interactive fraction matching game. To the right is the Notebook file and below is an instructional video of how to use the Smartboard lesson. |

Students Explaining Math Problems
I believe that it is important for students to be able to explain math concepts to their peers. I hope to promote a collaborative environment where students share knowledge by developing skills to teach and learn from each other. This is why I decided to take videos of two students explaining their strategy for solving a multiplication problem.
Sumdog is an excellent interactive site for students to improve and practice their math. Students can play math games at home and school and parents and teachers can monitor their learning. I find this site extremely useful as a teacher because it shows how many games students have played. This way, if I gave class time to students to practice their math on sumdog I can ensure that they are staying on task. This site also keeps track of student's progression. I can see what problems students are successful in and where they are experiencing difficulties, which can inform my day-to-day teaching. In addition, I can monitor and individualize the level and type of games students are playing. If I want my students to all practice multiplication, I can block questions that would be too difficult for them and ones that are too easy or off topic like simple addition.
Students can compete against their classmates and against other schools, but each student plays at their own level.
In my internship experience, students really enjoyed playing sumdog, all students were engaged and on task.
